GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, Coeur d'Alene City Council tabled changes to require sidewalks for new projects and repairs regardless of distance and to raise the permit threshold from $30,000 to $45,000; council members said the rules need clearer language so homeowners do not face extra costs (staff will revise the proposal next month) (30% of neighborhoods lack sidewalks, leaving pedestrians to walk in streets). - ➤ In Boise, senators approved the Medicaid budget—Idaho's largest spending measure—on Monday with a 22–13 vote after extended debate. The $5.2 billion plan has $3.4 billion from the federal government and an extra $674 million for necessary contracts and reforms, and it will go to the House for another vote. Coeur d'Alene Press
- ➤ On Monday, the Senate passed Senate Bill 1198 with a vote of 27-8 to ban DEI in required courses, hiring, admissions and training at public colleges. The bill now heads to a House committee—lawmakers say these restrictions will check DEI programs— and public universities may see changes in policies. Coeur d'Alene Press
- ➤ The Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District office in Fernan is temporarily closed because a broken water line caused the issue–the Forest Service offices in Smelterville and Coeur d'Alene remain open for maps, permits, and customer service.
