COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rathdrum Police Department will host a scam awareness talk from 5 to 7 p.m. May 7 at Lakeland High School Commons & will explain how to protect personal information, report scams, and recognize different scam types.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • On Monday, nearly 20 nonprofits—including Furry Farm Rescue—shared their missions at Companions Animal Center on Atlas Road to kick off Idaho Gives, the state’s largest collective giving campaign running April 28 to May 1. Furry Farm Rescue explained that donations are vital to cover high veterinary costs for dogs like Emily and sustain their care services.  Coeur d'Alene Press

  • On May 10, the Lake City High School Class of 2025 will hold a dinner and auction benefit at the Coeur d'Alene Elks Lodge from 5 to 9 p.m.—food will be provided by Drummin Up BBQ and tickets cost $40 to support a safe and sober graduation night.  Coeur d'Alene Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new directory lists veteran service offices in North Idaho to help veterans and their families access free, accredited assistance with VA claims and benefits. The guide covers offices in Post Falls, Sandpoint, Bonners Ferry, and Wallace (offering support for disability, pension claims, and more).  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • The Idaho Division of Veterans Services offers emergency relief grants for veterans and their dependents to help pay for food, fuel, shelter, and other basic needs during uncertain times — applicants must show Idaho residency, an honorable discharge, and proof they have applied for other benefits, with no single grant or lifetime total exceeding $1,500.  Coeur d'Alene Press

  • A new report from the Alzheimer’s Association shows that 73,000 caregivers in Idaho serve more than 30,000 people with Alzheimer’s as the state must boost providers by 31% by 2032—Jordan Hunter of the regional Alzheimer’s Association described the report as 'the tip of the iceberg'—.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Veterans, especially those aged 50 and older, are at risk for age-related macular degeneration that can lead to low vision—making everyday activities like reading and driving hard—and are advised to get regular eye exams and use VA rehabilitation services.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • The Post Falls Veterans Home, a 64-bed skilled nursing facility opened in November 2022, cares for veterans and their families with regular activities such as whiskey and wings happy hours, video trips, and spring sling cornhole. Home administrator Amber Goodchild said her team meets monthly with volunteers to review and adjust programs to match residents’ needs—ensuring each veteran receives the proper support.  Coeur d'Alene Press
