COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today in Wallace, Depot Day broke records with 319 classic cars registered and nearly 2,500 visitors plus Gary Damm’s 1957 Chevy Nomad taking Best of Show. Kathy Harper from the Northern Pacific Depot Museum said the one-day event awarded 74 trophies and held a raffle won by locals Elmer and Corki Mattila plus marked a celebration of Wallace's heritage with plans noting the depot's 40th move anniversary and 125th birthday.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • John Underwood, a Korean War veteran from Hayden who is soon to celebrate his 92nd birthday, mows his large lawn every few days to stay active — he once served as a Marine in Korea — and now cares for his garden as his peaceful sanctuary.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Local police arrested 36-year-old Cody Rencurel at a Coeur d'Alene hotel on May 9 for the deliberate homicide of 35-year-old Dixie Schroeder after investigators in Havre, Mont, linked him to her vehicle and discovered evidence from a search that suggested additional violent crimes were planned — he remains in custody in Kootenai County pending transfer to Montana.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Private security guards from Lear Asset Management pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor battery, false imprisonment, uniform violations and duty violations after dragging a Post Falls woman from the auditorium at Coeur d’Alene High School during a legislative town hall, and a Post Falls resident also pleaded not guilty to a battery charge.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • A hunter shot and killed a female grizzly bear in the Priest Lake drainage last Friday after mistaking it for a black bear — he immediately self-reported the incident via the Citizens Against Poaching hotline and is cooperating with Idaho Department of Fish and Game as they investigate the killing.  The Spokesman-Review

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two iconic wooden boats from the film 'On Golden Pond' (the Mariah and the Thayer IV) are on display at Hagadone Marine Group's showroom for the summer in Coeur d'Alene. The showroom also features film memorabilia (including a propeller signed by Hepburn and a movie script) that highlights the craftsmanship of wooden boats.  Coeur d'Alene Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Coeur d'Alene School Board accepted trustee Allison Anderton's resignation after she was arrested for driving under the influence & possession of drug paraphernalia at a meeting at Midtown Meeting Center on Monday. The vacant Zone 1 seat covering Dalton Gardens & Fernan Lake Village will be filled by July, with community members able to submit applications starting May 14 and due by June 16 while the new trustee serves until Dec. 31.  Coeur d'Alene Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Work to cap the sludge pond at the Bunker Hill Superfund site has ramped up this season as EPA workers began the cover last month and plan to finish by August to seal the 8-acre pond that held toxic sludge; the project uses three lined cells for safe sludge disposal and is overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • The Recreation Sites Program, established with EPA, DEQ — and Panhandle Health District in 2016, works to manage risks from heavy metals at the Bunker Hill Superfund Site while advising visitors to exercise caution during recreation. A community meeting is set for May 21 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Fernan Forest Service Building to review safe practices and cleanup progress.  Coeur d'Alene Press
