COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At a recent Fairgrounds Impact Town Hall, 14-year-old Avery Deeds told Commissioner Bruce Mattare that the fairgrounds are part of the community’s identity and Mattare assured residents there are no plans to sell the 81 acres. North Idaho Fair Board officials said they are working with consultants on a master plan for a new building near the Jacklin Building—aiming to meet growing event demand and boost fairgrounds revenue.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Companions Animal Center in Coeur d'Alene ran out of dog food last week as donations declined—forcing the center to turn people away from its monthly pet pantry. The center cares for 50 dogs and 22 foster puppies while using 100 pounds of food a day and the pantry saw a 20% surge—42 of 75 registered families attended this month.  Coeur d'Alene Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • John and Tina Hough were relieved when the sale of The Roosevelt Inn closed Friday — the deal with an unnamed local buyer ended a series of failed attempts to sell the historic building. They plan to retire and leave the inn by June 6 after spending 26 years building a successful business and cherished community space.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Idaho State Police are asking the public for help identifying a gray Ford F-150 that struck a Kenworth semi-truck in a hit-and-run crash on I-90 westbound May 16 at 12:26 p.m. in an active construction zone near Fourth of July Pass Exit — the pickup had large yellow storage bins and no visible license plate, and witnesses are urged to call 208 209 8730 — as investigators review the incident.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • MAC's ArtFest celebrates 40 years with a weekend event at the museum campus from Friday to Sunday — organizers will host 75 artist booths, live music, kids' art workshops led by local artist Gloria Fox, food trucks and a beer garden on a $5 admission fee, while also featuring current museum exhibits. The event attracted over 220 booth applications and highlights a broad range of art forms and community engagement.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • North Idaho College trustees voted Wednesday night for a $58.9 million fiscal year 2026 budget that includes a tuition increase of $5.50 per credit for in-district students and $6 per credit for others—the first rise in seven years. The budget avoids a base property tax hike and uses fund balance to lessen a $1.2 million gap while enrollment grows.  Coeur d'Alene Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Idaho Trail Association is seeking volunteers for several trail cleanup projects in the Panhandle. Volunteers will work on the Timber Mountain Trail on July 12th, the Coeur d’Alene River project from July 25th—27th with a $25 refundable deposit, the Beetop—Roundtop Trail from Aug. 9th—10th with overnight camping starting Aug. 8th, and the Heart Lake project from Aug. 10th—16th with a $50 refundable deposit—attendees will also be entered in a drawing for a Hiawatha Trail shuttle ticket on Aug. 18th.  Coeur d'Alene Press

  • The League of Women Voters is holding a convention on June 14 in Coeur d'Alene to discuss challenges in women’s healthcare as four speakers explain issues like limited care and barriers for immigrants.
