COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Senior Meals offers set menus at Lake City, Hayden, Post Falls, Rathdrum and Spirit Lake centers on different weekdays, with Lake City serving meat loaf on Monday, chicken strips on Wednesday and baked ham on Friday—reservations are required by 11 a.m. or the previous day at each center. Hayden and other centers also provide transportation for those in need—phone numbers are available for seniors to call and secure their meals.  Coeur d'Alene Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Thursday night, the union representing about 56,000 grocery and health workers in Western Washington, North Idaho and northeastern Oregon voted to authorize a strike at stores owned by Albertsons and Kroger to push for better wages, staffing and a fully funded healthcare plan. The vote requires a 72-hour notice and does not trigger an immediate work stoppage as contract talks will resume on June 12—13.  The Spokesman-Review

  • Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris warns residents that a text message scam pretends to be from the Department of Vehicles, threatening license suspension and legal charges while directing users to a fake payment site—residents are urged to verify any notices by calling the DMV or sheriff directly.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the North Idaho Pride Alliance hosts its ninth annual Pride in the Park at Coeur d'Alene City Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with live performances, dancing, and local vendors+ a family zone for kids. The alliance will also host a Queer Blood Drive on June 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Local artist Robert Perry, originally from Coeur d'Alene, returned home to study at North Idaho College where he mentored fellow artists and organized student art shows. He will display some of his work at Magpie gallery this July—boosting the local art scene.  Coeur d'Alene Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Coeur d'Alene High School valedictorian Adeline Smith earned a 4.49 GPA and will attend Brown University in the fall where she plans to study physics and follow a pre-med track. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A state watchdog report said that children in residential treatment facilities had less oversight for abuse investigations than those in foster care because there is no formal process for such cases. Lawmakers released the report Friday and Gov. Brad Little added that the Department of Health and Welfare made progress and would work on reforms.  Coeur d'Alene Press
