GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting next year, Idaho will end over-the-counter sales for nonresident deer and elk tags and require hunters to buy a nonrefundable $185 license to join a lottery — with the first year waiving an extra $18 application fee. Hunters can select up to five hunts per species and team up with three additional licensed hunters, and those who do not win a tag still have options to hunt for other game.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Avista launched its comprehensive Wildfire Resiliency Plan in 2020 that hardened its grid and replaced wooden poles with steel—steps that include vegetation management, fire safety mode and planned public power shutoffs when conditions are risky—while urging regulators, fire agencies and the public to share responsibility.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local reader asked doctors if lung capacity decreases with age after noticing shallow breathing during a yoga class at the community center. Doctors explained that lung capacity peaks in early adulthood and naturally declines—while exercise, deep breathing, and a healthy lifestyle can maintain function, the loss of lung elasticity cannot be reversed.  The Spokesman-Review
