Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 26th of June.
Good morning, Coeur d'Alene.
Today, a bench made from a fallen maple tree was dedicated at McEuen Park to honor Paul Anderson, a longtime community helper who passed on May 8.
The bench is flanked by a white pine tree and a dogwood tree with large rocks and shrubs around it (a plaque honoring him will be added later), and a celebration is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. July 1 at Hagadone Event Center.
Coeur d'Alene’s Sunrise Rotary Club marked a generational shift on Tuesday as outgoing President Jane Wilkey passed the gavel to incoming President Christopher Dallenbach—Wilkey raised $14,677 in grants and revived a popular fun run during her historic tenure—and the club looks to welcome more young leaders. Wilkey, who became the club’s youngest president at 25, made way for Dallenbach, the second youngest to lead, who brings over 15 years of financial experience.
The Budweiser Clydesdales will visit the North Idaho State Fair in August, and officials announced on June 17 that the horses will make several appearances to support the fair’s Keeping Tradition Alive theme — a sign of a community celebration of heritage.
The eighth annual Hayden Lake Classic Boat Show will take place Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hayden Lake Marina in front of the Boathouse restaurant and will feature antique and classic mahogany speed boats of different shapes and sizes.
The Hayden Lake Watershed Improvement District will also offer information on its water quality efforts—free and open to the public.
Coeur d’Alene Public Library trustees voted Wednesday to dissolve a regional library consortium—final decision will come in July.
Rathdrum City Council approved Hayden Homes' request to rezone the 127-acre Arestad property on Wednesday night, paving the way for nearly 500 new homes to be built over the next six to eight years.
The homebuilder will make traffic improvements—such as funding a roundabout up to $150,000—and address fixes outlined in the traffic study.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said on June 25 it will end federal rules that stop logging and road building on national forests, but Idaho’s Roadless Rule still restricts development on 9.3 million acres.
The state law, made in 2008 to replace an older rule, is backed by conservation groups, tribal leaders, and state officials—seeking to balance forest safety with economic use.
New Edge Living now owns CDA National Reserve and is planning a $165 million project that offers new homesites starting at $535,000 and residences from about $2.5 million; the first homes will have reservations open July 3 this summer.
The project will add a new clubhouse, a renovated golf course, outdoor trails plus a health program with local Clinic 5C to support wellness.
