Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 17th of July.
Good morning, Coeur d'Alene.
At Rathdrum Daze this weekend, Masonic Lodge No. 41 will set up a dunk tank for their Backpack Program—aiming to raise funds to distribute 240 backpacks and school supplies in August, after handing out 70 backpacks last year.
The dunk tank will be located near the Lakeland High School sign where attendees can take their shot for a couple of bucks.
The Canopy Village annual fundraiser raised a record $425,000—up $100,000 from last year—and welcomed 575 supporters on the same day as the remembrance ceremony for Battalion Chief John Morrison, with funds set to help provide crisis respite and shelter for youth and families across North Idaho.
Crews finished fuel mitigation work on 60 acres of Tubbs Hill after four weeks of thinning and clearing to remove wildfire ladder fuels near trails and McEuen Park — urban forester Nick Goodwin said trail closures were minimal.
He added that the remaining $100,000 from the federal grant will fund work on another 30 acres as soon as this year, with slash piles to be burned in the fall.
On Wednesday, Congressman Russ Fulcher urged Congress to pray for the families of battalion chiefs John Morrison and Frank Harwood, who died on June 29 during an ambush shooting while fighting a brush fire on Canfield Mountain, and for fire engineer David Tysdal, who is recovering from injuries—he said their heroism shows the best of Idaho.
Officials say the Kroc Center masters open water swim will begin at 8:15 a.m. Saturday from the Second Street entrance to Tubbs Hill and finish at Sanders Beach as swimmers cover a 1.3-mile course—conditions will be sunny with water over 70 degrees.
Only U.S. Masters Swimming members may participate, with about 75 swimmers signed up so far.
