Jim Duffield recalled his family's history when they owned the land between Fourth Street and Government Way and explained that Habitat for Humanity now plans to build 21 affordable housing units on the remaining plot known as Duffield Place—honoring his mother's legacy of iris bulbs. The Coeur d'Alene Garden Club planted 100 iris bulb segments around a sign featuring a hand-painted iris by Duffield’s niece as a symbol of this community effort.

Shasta Groene, who escaped a serial killer in 2005 and spent 20 years fighting for her life, now shares her story with author Gregg Olsen in the memoir Out of the Woods: A Girl, a Killer, and a Lifelong Struggle to Find the Way Home.

The book will be released Aug. 1 and Olsen + Groene will hold a signing event at the Well-Read Moose in Coeur d'Alene on Aug. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Last year the Coeur d’Alene Tribe finished a wetland restoration project at Hepton Lake along the lower St. Joe River to restore its natural ecosystem and support traditional practices.

The project built a 500-foot levee plug with four culverts—an effort that won an Engineering Excellence Award and now helps manage water levels for cultural use.

The Idaho Transportation Department will begin a two-week nighttime repaving project on U.S. Highway 95—stretching from Granite Loop Road to Blacktail Road north of Athol—starting Monday.

Work will run from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. each weeknight with flaggers assisting drivers using a single alternating lane.

Residents can enroll in CPR classes offered in-person, online and blended formats by the American Red Cross and AHA at local hospitals, schools and community centers.

The two-hour courses, which include options for teenagers, cost varies+ and help build skills for handling emergencies such as sudden cardiac arrest.
