Good morning, Coeur d'Alene. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 29th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Veterans Help Net has produced the monthly Veterans Press with the Coeur d'Alene/Post Falls Press for 68 months to share useful veteran support information—last week, a local couple learned about a caregiving payment program after reading the paper and contacting a Tax-Aide organization.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • American Legion Post 154 is helping Idaho veterans understand benefits like VA health care, disability compensation, home loans and education support. Veterans needing help filing or appealing claims may call local officers—Tom Freeman in Post Falls at 208-446-1090—and state resources for more assistance.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • At Monday Night Dinner at Adam Schluter’s home, a PBS crew from Ask This Old House filmed rapid backyard renovations that included fixing walkways, building an outdoor kitchen and improving landscaping—showing strong community support since the event began in 2018. The gathering also featured a surprise proposal from David Johnson on Taysia Matthias’ 29th birthday—highlighting the local bond forged over years of shared meals.  Coeur d'Alene Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Actor and stuntwoman Lisa Skvarla led a four-day action day camp at Follow My Lead dance studio in Post Falls where kids learned acting and taekwondo—skills like board breaking and on-camera auditioning were part of the program. The camp began on Monday and is designed to help participants build focus and respect.  Coeur d'Alene Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Old Military ID Card is limited to current service members, retirees and certain veterans with 100% disabilities — any honorably discharged veteran can apply for the new Veteran’s Identification Card by going to the 7th floor of the Veterans Administration Medical Center Mann-Granstaff with valid ID and a copy of their DD214. There is no cost for the card and the wait time is 30—60 days.  Coeur d'Alene Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • A retired RN described how physical and occupational therapists at the Spokane VA and Coeur d’Alene clinic helped him improve his mobility by providing a new rolling walker, exercise plans, and ongoing rehabilitation—services that are also available to veterans with chronic health conditions. Veterans who meet eligibility can ask their primary provider for a referral to these therapies.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • VA Health Care is one option for veterans along with TRICARE, Medicare, and private insurance—but family members usually do not qualify and enrolled veterans cannot get insurance subsidies. Combat veterans who enroll within five years of separation receive five years of cost-free care, and survivors of military sexual trauma can get free counseling without enrollment.  Coeur d'Alene Press
