  • Canopy Village announced a leadership reorganization that splits the CEO role into two executive director positions—one for its youth program and one for the foundation. CRIME NEWS

  • A homicide victim with traumatic injuries on a rural property north of Hayden Lake was identified as 35-year-old Kenneth B. Caldero from Kootenai County after a 911 call on Monday afternoon reported an injured man with blood on a front porch in the 15000 block of North Hamlet Trail; law enforcement found no further victims or suspects—investigators continue to probe his suspicious death.  The Spokesman-Review
  • A 28-year-old man was sentenced to 96 months in federal prison—he mailed graphic letters threatening a federal judge and prosecutor while serving time for burglary, and his new sentence is set to run consecutively with previous convictions.  Coeur d'Alene Press

  • Capt. David Kilmer will share his sailing adventure along Italy's Amalfi Coast when he presents his new book at 7 p.m. on Aug. 26 at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library — his trip began in Naples and stopped at Capri, Positano, Amalfi and Ischia.   • Windermere Coeur d'Alene Realty is partnering with the Coeur d'Alene Backpack Program & the Windermere Foundation to host a free back-to-school celebration on Aug. 21 in the upper parking lot at 1000 Northwest Blvd where each child will receive a backpack with a charm, school supplies, a barbecue lunch, haircuts, and fun activities like bounce houses and crafts.  Coeur d'Alene Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Avista reduced water flow through the Post Falls Dam into the Spokane River last week to help maintain Lake Coeur d'Alene levels at 500 cubic feet per second when the lake dropped nearly three inches below average. The lower flow will remain until the Tuesday after Labor Day—preventing a faster decline that would affect many water users.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Raúl Labrador presented the Idaho Medal of Honor to four law enforcement officers at the Idaho State Capitol, including Coeur d'Alene police Sgt. Taylor Beach who saved a wounded colleague in a February 2018 shooting—she risked her life by returning fire at an armed suspect. The ceremony honored their acts of courage and selfless service as they protected their communities.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • The Idaho Transportation Department invites residents to a meeting at the ITD Athol Shed, 6303 E. Parks Road, on Aug 19 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. to offer feedback on a design phase project that aims to improve safety on US 95 by eliminating left turns—allowing right-in/right-out access—and building a new frontage road to ease congestion.  Coeur d'Alene Press

  • Panhandle Health District confirmed a measles case in an unvaccinated child in Kootenai County—marking the first case in the northern Panhandle since 1991 as officials investigate the source and notify locations the child visited.  Coeur d'Alene Press
