EDUCATION NEWS

  • Due to a $2 million funding drop, Lakeland Joint School District cut eight bus routes for the 2025-2026 school year, leaving some students in Spirit Lake, Thayer Farms and Radiant Lake without a ride—five middle and high school routes and three elementary routes—and district officials said they will watch the routes and tell families if things change.  Coeur d'Alene Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Coeur d’Alene Tribe announced its Fisheries Habitat Project was recognized as an Exemplary Project in the 2025 Habitat Retrospective Report—highlighting its work to restore native Westslope cutthroat trout habitat and blend traditional knowledge with science. The project, which builds on over 40 years of restoration efforts on the Reservation, supports the Tribe’s cultural and subsistence traditions.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Since Wednesday, the Sunset Fire doubled to 1,600 acres and forced evacuations in southern Bonner County near Athol after it consumed three structures and prompted orders for residents on Raven, Crosswhite, and Little Blacktail roads to leave immediately. Fire crews are using helicopters and air tankers — supported by ground teams — to battle the blaze while officials expand evacuations to nearby neighborhoods for safety.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • The Idaho Transportation Department has set a temporary 55 mph speed limit on US-95 between Granite Hill and Blacktail Road to help firefighting efforts and evacuations during the Sunset Fire response—Idaho State Police will patrol the road to enforce the change.  Coeur d'Alene Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials confirmed two measles cases in unvaccinated children in eastern Idaho; one child in Bonneville County got sick after contact with an international visitor and is the first local case since 1991. A child in Kootenai County was also diagnosed—the first reported in the Panhandle in over 30 years—and officials say that self-isolation during the contagious period likely prevented further exposure.  Coeur d'Alene Press
