- ➤ Kids learned how to shoot bows and arrows at the Idaho Fish and Game youth archery exhibit held yesterday at the North Idaho State Fair—novices like Nova Wearly from Hayden had their first chance to aim and hit fun targets, and the fair continues through Sunday at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds. - ➤ Generations Barbershop partnered with the Spokane Tribe to offer free haircuts today for over 50 reservation kids from kindergarten to 12th grade as summer ends and school begins—boosting youth confidence—officials said. The Spokesman-Review

- ➤ The Coeur d’Alene Arts Commission is accepting nominations for the 29th annual Arts Awards to honor businesses, organizations, individuals or students who have significantly contributed to the local arts—nominations close on August 29. Coeur d'Alene Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Debbie Critchfield, Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction, said the state is strengthening civics education by updating the civics test and requiring a full year of instruction so students learn about their rights and duties. She added that her department has proposed new curriculum standards—adding a two-semester Western civilization course—to better prepare students for active citizenship. Coeur d'Alene Press
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ BEIPC will hold its annual Bunker Hill Superfund Site Cleanup Tour on Wednesday, Aug. 27, starting at 9 a.m. with a meeting in Kellogg—followed by a guided field tour beginning at 10:50 a.m. at Gene Day Park in Osburn where local officials will update attendees on remediation efforts before the tour concludes near Kellogg around 3:30 p.m. Coeur d'Alene Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local housing groups including the Panhandle Affordable Housing Alliance and representatives from Post Falls testified before the Legislative Land Use and Housing Study Committee to ask legislators for changes that will lower home costs for county workers. Councilor Kiki Miller and other advocates recommended easing zoning rules—allowing twin homes and reducing accessory dwelling unit bans—with the committee set to meet again on Sept. 26.
