COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Press plans a special Veterans Day publication to honor local veterans and is asking residents to submit photos, stories, and service details including awards like the Purple Heart — submissions are due by October 15 so the keep-sake issue will be published on November 11.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Game wardens are asking locals for tips after 31 kokanee salmon were illegally dumped near the intersection of Warrant Street and North Reed Road in Hayden on Sept. 15—markings on the fish show they were caught in gillnets and that wasting them violates state rules.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Coeur d'Alene Fire Department donated a 1999 ladder truck to the NIC Workforce Training Center’s Firefighter 1 Academy on September 13—making it the first front-line ladder truck used for training by the city. The donation gives students a rare chance to learn with equipment that once served the community and will help prepare future firefighters.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Members of the Lt. George Farragut Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution are hosting an essay contest and classroom program for fifth to eighth graders in Coeur d’Alene to learn about American history ahead of America 250 events on July 4. Students must submit essays of 300 to 1,000 words by Nov.7 and the program will include a sing-along of the 13 colonies and a reading of the Concord Hymn—activities that help connect them with the past.  Coeur d'Alene Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scouts from local troops 222 and 3 will team with the Hayden Lake Watershed Association and Hayden Lake Watershed Improvement District at Sportsman Park on the north end of Hayden Lake at 9 a.m. Saturday to remove 200 20-lb bags of dried plant debris and reduce up to 20 kg of phosphorus.  Coeur d'Alene Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Idaho Transportation Department announced that a portion of the new Single Point Urban Interchange at I-90 and SH-41 in Post Falls will open Friday morning—drivers should plan extra travel time due to overnight closures and temporary access changes.  Coeur d'Alene Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Windy Manzardo, a local nurse and baseball mom, got a heart transplant on July 8 after 32 months on the waitlist—she faced a dangerous VT storm and serious health issues from cardiac sarcoidosis—and now she works on her recovery even though she still feels weak and short of breath. Her community and family, including her son who plays for the Guardians, support her as she takes steps each day in her rehab.  The Spokesman-Review
