COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Vincent de Paul North Idaho is holding the Souport the End of Homelessness fundraiser on Oct. 16 (11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) at the North Idaho Fairgrounds to raise funds for its warming center that gives shelter and resources when temperatures drop; tickets cost $25 and include unlimited soup tasting, bread and dessert.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hayden Cinema posted its October 3 to 9 schedule with matinee prices at $6.50, night rates at $8.50, and a $5 Tuesday special—films include Taylor Swift, Gabby’s Dollhouse and Demon Slayer shown at various times.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Coeur d’Alene Arts Commission announced the recipients of the 29th annual Arts Awards, with winners including Sandi Bloem for the Arts Legacy Award and Jenny Shotwell for the Excellence in the Arts Award. The event will be held Oct. 22 at Hagadone Event Center from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.—Arts Commissioner Lindsey Sichelstiel will emcee as local groups including Shakespeare CDA, CDA Summer Theatre, Aspire Theatre and Lake City Playhouse perform along with a poem by poet laureate Jennifer Passaro.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Silverwood Theme Park hosted the opening night of its 16th annual Scarywood Haunted Nights on Friday when thousands of guests experienced live scares from scarecrows and clowns. The event runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 7 to 11 p.m. through Nov 2 — tickets are sold online.  Coeur d'Alene Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews in Idaho planned prescribed burns this fall to reduce wildfire risks and restore forest health while firefighting operations continue through the government shutdown — a seasonal firefighter died last Friday after being struck by a falling tree during one burn operation.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Today, the Hayden Lake Watershed Improvement District said harmful algal bloom advisories have grown over the past 12 years with one still ongoing at Hayden Lake. The district is working with Montana-based SWCA Environmental Consultants (in collaboration with EutroPHIX) to study water quality and cut phosphorous from Hayden Creek.  Coeur d'Alene Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Coeur d'Alene Public Library is hosting a free candidate forum on Sunday, Oct. 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. where four mayoral candidates and several city council candidates will answer emailed questions—attendees should send questions to Bullard at [email protected] and moderator Pat Costello will lead the discussion.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • A candidate for Coeur d'Alene mayor, John Pulsipher, sent a letter to Mayor Woody McEvers urging him to ask Councilman Dan Gookin to withdraw so that the non-KCRCC vote is not split—Pulsipher noted he would defer his salary to a first responders fund and offer McEvers a senior advisor role if elected. McEvers dismissed the letter as bizarre while Gookin said he will not drop out as the four-way race continues ahead of the November 4 election.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Coeur d'Alene Detective Dan Haley was sworn in as the new Rathdrum chief of police on Friday after Tomi McLean retired in June—he brings over 15 years of law enforcement experience and plans to work closely with residents using local crime data. His appointment is praised by local police chiefs who say his strong character will help guide the department through future growth.  Coeur d'Alene Press

  • Coeur d'Alene gardeners are advised to plant bulbs and care for perennials this fall so roots set before winter and bright blooms emerge in spring. Experts say that moderate temperatures and proper soil care help plants thrive—ensuring a vibrant garden next season.  Coeur d'Alene Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lakeland High School’s football team started the season 6-0 and was awarded $30,000 through T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights Contest, making it the only Idaho finalist in the nationwide bid for a $1 million field makeover that will improve seating at Corbit Field—community members will vote online until Oct. 24 with the final winner set to be announced on Oct. 30. This contest could bring major upgrades to the school’s athletic facilities and boost local pride.  The Spokesman-Review
