Good morning, Coeur d'Alene. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 7th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Press is asking locals to send photos, stories, and service details for a special publication honoring veterans that will be featured in the Nov. 11 issue—submissions should include awards like the Purple Heart. Contributions are due by Oct. 15 and will also include information on local veteran services and military groups.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • During the Military Mountain Ride on Aug. 23, VFW commander Chris Marker accepted a $2,000 check from Don Byrd and Bill Needham for Veteran Stand Down Days at VFW Post 1675 in Osburn—money that will cover gas and grocery cards for veterans at the next event on Nov. 6.  Coeur d'Alene Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Idaho State Police has extended its trooper training academy application deadline to Oct. 17 amid a statewide shortage of troopers—training will begin in January in Meridian with recruits paid during the 22-week course. The change comes as Coeur d’Alene and Lewiston areas report a notable decline in staffing.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Kellogg officials submitted a Letter of Map Revision to FEMA to update flood maps based on new data that shows the 100-year flood flow is roughly 60 percent lower than previously estimated; they have asked Senators Jim Risch and Mike Crapo for support. The revision would reduce the mapped floodplain from 1,118 parcels over 2,500 acres to 523 parcels over 760 acres — a change that may lower flood insurance costs and free up land for redevelopment.  Coeur d'Alene Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kootenai Health Foundation announced on Monday a multi-year $950K grant from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women to aid survivors of sexual assault—domestic, dating and stalking violence in northern counties. The funding will expand the local SANE program and boost coordinated trauma-informed care for those affected.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Grace Sayler, a three-year-old with Noonan syndrome, remains stable despite her heart failure worsening when doctors reduced her chemotherapy drug this spring. Her family has launched a fundraiser to support research into alternative treatments as another attempt to adjust her medication will be made next spring—hoping to extend her life.  Coeur d'Alene Press
