COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local harvest and Halloween events run from October 25 through Halloween and offer free, family-friendly fun in Coeur d'Alene, Hayden, and Rathdrum. Activities include a Harvest Festival at the Riverstone market—trunk or treat gatherings and a technical education center open house with games and prizes.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Coeur d'Alene Insurance Agency received a $10,000 Make More Happen Award from Liberty Mutual and Safeco Insurance for its partnership with Canopy Village, a nonprofit that helps children and families in crisis. The award will fund expanded summer programs, including a community garden club and mentoring camp—doubling an initial $5,000 gift after over 500 community votes.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 29th annual Coeur d'Alene Arts Awards at the Hagadone Event Center honored local art leaders as Sandi Bloem received the first Arts Legacy Award and Jenny Shotwell celebrated the city's creative spirit. The event also introduced the new Art Spotlight CDA grants that will give Lake City Playhouse, the Music Conservatory of Coeur d'Alene, and Coeur d'Alene Summer Theater $5,000 each — supporting youth programs and music scholarships.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Amanda Knox spoke at the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber’s 5th Annual Women’s Luncheon at The Coeur d’Alene Resort on Wednesday—addressing nearly 700 locals and sharing how she reclaimed her life story after her exoneration. She explained that meeting her former prosecutor, who said he would not retry her case, helped her gain a sense of liberation.  Coeur d'Alene Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Idaho Transportation Department has opened its second 'Name a Snowplow' contest for students in grades six through 12 to submit creative snowplow names that will be voted on by ITD employees. Two plows in each region will feature the winning names and the winning classrooms will receive a safety visit from the snowplow driver — teachers may email questions or entries as the contest remains open through October.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • On August 15, Gov. Brad Little announced a 3% budget holdback that forced the University of Idaho to cut 28 essential positions, which led to larger classes and fewer research opportunities. Several state colleges reduced staff and reorganized operations after permanent budget cuts were approved—measures that affected faculty roles and support positions.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Starting next month, Idaho will delay SNAP benefits because a federal shutdown has put funding at risk. Applications will still be accepted but wait times may be longer while WIC benefits remain unchanged.  Coeur d'Alene Press

  • Both the Idaho men's — women's basketball teams received first-place votes and ranked among the top four in the Big Sky preseason polls released Wednesday. The Idaho women will open their season at Washington State at 11 a.m. on Nov. 3 while the men start at 6:30 p.m. on the same day.  The Spokesman-Review
