COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ross Welburn was named Hayden’s Distinguished Veteran for 2025 and will be honored today at McIntire Family Park during the Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. The Navy veteran, who enlisted in 1965 and served as a rescue crewman, is recognized locally for his volunteer work at schools and museums—his service has shaped his community.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Coeur d'Alene’s Leaf Fest will begin Wednesday—city crews will start south of Sherman Avenue and work north until Dec. 5, and residents are asked to rake leaves and pine needles a foot from the curb for proper drainage.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that the new Coeur d'Alene Idaho Temple will be built at the corner of Hanley Avenue and Coeur Terre Boulevard on a 10.91-acre site and will include a nearly 30,000 square foot single-story building with an attached spire, meetinghouse, and ancillary building. Construction will take up to three years — church leaders said the temple’s design draws on local architecture and nature to offer a peaceful space for reflection.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 250th Marine Corps Birthday Ball held Monday night at the Best Western Plus Coeur d'Alene Inn brought together 350 guests who enjoyed a POW/MIA table ceremony—veterans received $50 cards while local leaders and a member of the Pappy Boyington family were honored. Tina Batha, who planned the event in memory of her late husband, said the night filled her with gratitude for the service of the Marines.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Jerry Staub, a Kootenai County resident, has written a book of poems titled Vietnam As They Knew It—he gathered stories from Vietnam veterans to reflect on the war—using heartfelt verses to honor the sacrifices made.  Coeur d'Alene Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On November 10th, Kellogg High School Marine Corps JROTC program celebrated the Marine Corps' 250th birthday with a ceremonial cake cutting using a Mameluke sword and a historic message read by Cadet Alex Cassidy. Retired Marine Corps Cpl. Dave Carlile was honored as the guest of honor—underscoring the baton passing of tradition from veteran Marines to new cadets.  Coeur d'Alene Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cleanup efforts along Canyon Creek have made significant progress since work began in 2023, with crews excavating waste from the Star Project in 2025 and rebuilding 800 linear feet of stream. Additional projects will continue from Flynn Mine to the Canyon Creek Garbage Dump as part of the ongoing cleanup at the *Bunker Hill Superfund Site*.  Coeur d'Alene Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dee Sasse, Idaho American Legion department commander and founder of Post 154 in Rathdrum, spoke on Oct. 15 about her long Coast Guard career and becoming the first Kootenai County woman—she is the third female in 106 years to lead the organization. She said her campaign focused on uniting the Legion, boosting training, and making a user-friendly web page to help veterans.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • The Coeur d'Alene City Council upheld its September denial of Texas-based Dehong Marchtaler’s massage facility license at 408 E. Montana Ave after finding she failed to disclose her 2016 revoked massage certificate for misconduct—council members voted 5—0, saying her omission risked public safety and community morals.  Coeur d'Alene Press
