COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 49th annual Tesh 5K Fun Run starts at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Atlas Waterfront Park; the course follows North Idaho Centennial Trail past Riverstone to Harbor Center and raises funds for Tesh, Inc.—a nonprofit that helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Coeur d'Alene Press

  • Taysia Matthias, one of the youngest business owners, opened Alani Bakery at 291 E. Appleway Ave. She began baking behind her family's counter, built orders from home, and earned Chocolatier Master at the 2024 Chocolate Affair (aiming for the title again in 2026).  Coeur d'Alene Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Runner-up entry 'Clear as dust' in a local outdoor writing contest tells the story of a young rider who finds peace while riding among pine trees — a journey sparked by childhood memories and a lasting love for horses.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Twelve-year-old twins Jax and Eli Green from Spirit Lake competed in the national chess tournament in Spokane Dec. 11-14. They represented the local Spirit Lake Chess Club hosted by the Community Center - a club that brings together kids and adults to play, learn, and earn medals.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Coeur d’Alene native Shane Silas Neirinckx graduated this fall with degrees in international studies and political science after studying in Japan on a dean's scholarship + Boren award. He gained valuable experience in cultural and national security research and plans to pursue a federal career.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • North Idaho College submitted a $4M federal proposal to boost AI, robotics and automation training. If funded, the college will upgrade equipment and expand NIC X-Labs in collaboration with the University of Idaho’s Center for Intelligent Industrial Robotics + await funding decisions by year-end.  Coeur d'Alene Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kootenai Health and Regence BlueShield reached a deal after a monthlong impasse to keep about 23,000 in-network patients from facing a Jan. 1 coverage gap + the agreement requires no action from patients for continued care.  The Spokesman-Review

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Atlas Building Center was demolished Tuesday at the corner of US-95 and Kathleen Avenue to clear the way for The Junction at Kathleen—a project that will see 10 new lots developed, with Phase 1 scheduled for spring 2026.  Coeur d'Alene Press
