Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 14th of September.
Good morning, Coeur d'Alene.
On Saturday, around 100 volunteers gathered at a new ElderHelp site off East Dodd Road in Hayden to cut, stack, and transport over 60 cords of firewood for seniors and families who use wood heat in Kootenai County — part of the National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of 9/11 victims — and ElderHelp will distribute about 250 cords of wood. This community project helped those in need prepare for winter.
Construction is booming downtown as developers build the 15-story Sherman Tower, the 18-story Thomas George and the 6-story Marriott hotel—projects that will boost local jobs and revenue while aiming to preserve Coeur d’Alene’s unique character.
The Literacy Project of North Idaho will host its fourth annual Walk, Run, Read benefit on Sept.
20 at Coeur d'Alene City Park—races include a 10K at 8 a.m.—a 5K and 1-mile at 8:30 a.m.—and a Kids Dash at 9:15 a.m. Families can also join a book swap and sale, games, activities, and vendor booths at this community event.
At Honeysuckle Beach, Geoff Harvey from the Hayden Lake Watershed Association unveiled a new information kiosk that shows safe boating practices, county rules, invasive species details, a detailed bathymetric map, and tributes to local leaders—Gerry House, Gloria Lund, and lake manager Todd Walker. The kiosk also includes a lifejacket loaner station and brochures to help prevent quagga mussels from invading Hayden Lake.
Coeur d'Alene City Attorney Randy Adams said that tentative deals were reached with the Police Officer Association and the Lake City Employees Association—police get a one-year contract with a 3.5% wage adjustment and promotion increases while LCEA receives a two-year extension with similar changes. The agreements, affecting about 120 police members and 126 LCEA workers, will be reviewed by City Council at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the public library community room.
On Friday, 800 cubic yards of concrete were poured to build the second floor of Sherman Tower, a project a week ahead of schedule that will include 139 guest rooms and new dining areas.
The downtown area also sees progress at The Thomas George condos—an 18-story building with 60 luxury units and planned commercial spaces expected to be occupiable by the end of the month.
